Windows App: A unified workspace for accessing cloud PCs and remote applications

A few days ago, Microsoft presented its new application “Windows App”, an innovative solution that allows access to the Windows operating system from a wide range of devices, including iPhonesiPadsMacsPCs and web browsers. This application represents a significant advance in Microsoft’s strategy to offer a more integrated and versatile user experience.

The “Windows App” is conceived as a central hub that facilitates access to the Windows environment through streaming from various sources such as a remote PC, Azure Virtual DesktopWindows 365Microsoft Dev Box and Remote Desktop Services. This integration capability reflects Microsoft’s commitment to providing accessible and efficient solutions for managing remote work environments and user mobility. In the presentation, access from an Android device was seen, so it is expected to be compatible soon.

A notable feature of the “Windows App” is its wide compatibility with different platforms. This app supports multiple monitorscustom screen resolutions, and dynamic scaling, offering an optimized user experience. It also allows redirection of peripheral devices, such as webcams, storage devices, and printers, increasing its functionality and versatility.

Currently, the “Windows App” is primarily available for Microsoft business accounts, although there are signs that it could be available to the consumer market in the future.

Microsoft is pushing the integration of AI- powered web services into Windows, especially after the creation of the “Windows and Web Experiences” team. This manifests itself in Windows 11, with features like a main search interface that updates dynamically from the web, a widget system, and Copilot integration.

What the Windows app could be used for

Microsoft’s strategic focus points toward a future in which Windows moves entirely to the cloud, a vision already implemented in the enterprise with Windows 365 and now extending to the consumer market.

With Windows App we could have:

  • Remote Access and Mobility : Allows users to access their Windows environment from anywhere, using devices such as smartphones, tablets and laptops. This is especially useful for people who are constantly on the go or working remotely, providing a full desktop experience on mobile devices.
  • Work and Study Continuity : Students and professionals can continue their work or study on different devices without interruption. For example, a project started on a PC in the office or at home can be continued on an iPad or iPhone while traveling.
  • Windows Application Compatibility : Users of Apple devices or other non-Windows platforms will have the ability to run Windows-specific applications that would not otherwise be available on their native operating systems.
  • Games and Entertainment : Gamers could benefit from having access to Windows games on mobile devices, expanding entertainment possibilities.
  • Education and Training : The app can be a valuable tool in education, allowing students and educators to access Windows-based software and resources from anywhere.
  • Flexibility in Collaborative Work : Facilitates collaboration on projects, allowing teams to work together in real time across different platforms and devices.
  • Software Testing and Development : Developers and testers can use the app to test applications in different Windows environments without the need for multiple physical machines.
  • Technical Support and IT Management : Allows technical support teams to access and manage Windows systems remotely, simplifying maintenance and support tasks.
