If you’ve ever felt a chill when searching for your name on Google and finding more personal information than you’d like, you’re not alone. Digital privacy is a growing concern, but there are now tools that allow you to take proactive measures.

Concern about digital privacy is not new. Laws such as those implemented in Europe or California have established a legal precedent to protect user data. In this scenario, Permission Slip emerges as a practical solution developed by the Consumer Reports Innovation Lab, only useful in the United States, by the way.

What is Permission Slip?

Permission Slip is an application that acts as an intermediary between users and the companies that could be storing their personal data. Developed with the goal of giving consumers more control over their information, the application allows you to submit requests to delete accounts or stop the sale of personal data.

After registering with an email address, the app presents a list of companies that could have your data. With a simple tap, you can send a request to the company to delete your account or stop selling your information. The app also offers the ability to send automated requests to data brokers.

The app already supports a variety of companies, from McDonald’s and Applebee’s to Amazon and Netflix. And it doesn’t stop there: more companies are being added to expand its reach and usefulness.

Once the application is submitted, you can track its status through the application. In some cases, companies may require additional identity verification before fulfilling the request.
