How to capture screen record on PowerPoint of computer screen

New version of office allows us to capture screen record on PowerPoint of computer screen easily. Taking screenshots or recording the desktop screen is something that many users usually do for different purposes. To achieve this, many use third-party applications or even some options from Windows itself. However, there are users who are unaware of PowerPoint’s ability to perform these same tasks, something that we are going to tell you about below.

PowerPoint can help us to carry out the two tasks we have talked about, in addition to the fact that it is not very complicated to take the screen capture, nor the recording of it. Let’s see how we can do it.

Record yourself and screen with PowerPoint

PowerPoint allows us to record screen of our computer, including audio, and then insert it on a slide or save it as a totally independent file. We must take two things into account, since, to be able to record with audio included, we must have a sound card, microphone and if we want some speakers or headphones.

The way to get the screen to be recorded is as follows.

  • We open the slide where we want to place the recording.
  • Now we go to the Insert option, we go to Multimedia and select Screen recording.
  • Now we must click on Select area (minimum 64 x 64 pixels) if we want to mark the area that we are going to record. We also have the possibility to select the entire screen so that it is recorded in its entirety by pressing the Windows + Shift + F keys.
  • If we are going to select an area we will see how a cross-shaped cursor appears, which we must move to accommodate the entire area that we want to record.

  • The menu that appears at the top has several icons that represent various options that we can select.
    • Record / Pause : obviously the first icon with a circle shape is the one that marks the start of the recording, whether we select the entire screen or just an area. When we press it we will see how the pause button becomes.
    • Stop : right next to it we have an icon of a square that marks the button with which we are going to have the recording.
    • Select area : by clicking on the button just to the right of the previous one we can select an area to record, in case we need it at that moment and the full screen is no longer valid.
    • Microphone : this button shows a microphone and is nothing more than the way in which we can activate or deactivate the audio recording.
    • Record pointer : the last icon is to decide if we allow the pointer to leave the recording or if, on the contrary, we do not want it to leave.
  • Once we have finished recording, we will see how the video has been embedded directly in the slide that we had open.

  • If we want to save it as an independent file we must click on the edge of the video that is on the slide and select Save multimedia as.
  • At that time we can choose the folder in which we save this resulting MP4 file.

If you have Microsoft PowerPoint 2013 you must have the update of February 16, 2015 to be able to have these same powers that we just taught you.

Options we have about the screen video

Having the video inside the slide, we will be able to manage it in three ways, to integrate it as well as possible.

If we press the right mouse button on the edge of the video, we will see how 3 main options appear, which are:

  • Start : with this option we will be able to choose how we want the video to start in the presentation, if we want it to start automatically or only by clicking the mouse.
  • Trim : in this option we will be able to trim the video if it is long. It is easy to use, since we can cut wherever we want or use the Next / Previous Frame functions to be more precise.
  • Style : this third option is the one that will mark the visual integration of the video on the slide, since we can put different types of frames on it.

Screenshot with PowerPoint

If we want to take a screenshot in PowerPoint, we must follow a few simple steps, similar to those we have just seen.

  • We open the slide where we want to place the screenshot.
  • Now we go to the Insert option and we will see that in the Images section there is an icon called Capture, which we must press.
  • At that time we will see two options. One is that you make a screenshot of a specific window and directly, or that we select an area for it.
  • If we are going to select an area, we will see how a cross-shaped cursor appears, which we must move to cover the entire area that we want to capture.
  • Once done, we will see how that same capture appears on the slide that we have selected, as it happened with the video recording that we have seen before.
  • If we want to save it as an independent file we must click on the border of the photo that is on the slide and select Save as image .
  • At that moment we can choose the folder in which we save this file, choosing between JPEG, TIFF, PNG, BMP, WMF, EMF and SVG formats.

Options we have about the screenshot

Once we have the capture on the slide, PowerPoint allows us to manage said photo in two ways, to integrate it in the best possible way.

We must click with the right mouse button on the edge of the capture and the two main options that we were talking about will appear.

  • Crop : in this option we will be able to crop the image in the way that we like the most, so that it looks good on the slide. This trimming system is very easy to use and entails some difficulty.
  • Style : this third option is the one that allows you to put different types of frames to the image capture and thus achieve a style similar to what you are doing.

This is the way to get PowerPoint to help us to take a screen capture and that we can also make a video of what happens on the desktop of our computer.

PowerPoint Screen recording for Mac

Mac users can download Office 365 for Mac as part of their university membership. Alternatively, Mac has its own screen recording tools available.

With macOS Mojave, press Shift-Command (⌘)-5 on your keyboard to see all the controls you need to record video and capture still images of your screen. Use these onscreen controls to select whether to record the entire screenrecord a selected portion or capture a still image of your screen. If you haven’t upgraded to Mojave, you can record the screen with QuickTime Player.
