Watly produces solar energy, purified water and the internet to supply a small town

There are many companies dedicated to research with the aim of trying to improve the lives of the most disadvantaged, such as the towns of Africa or the areas that have been at war for years. This, logically, apart from all the work that NGOs and other organizations do day after day without rest. Watly produces solar energy, purified water and the internet to supply a small town.

Watly is a system that was born to solve those situations in which people do not have any system to purify water, putting their health and that of those around them at risk. In addition, it is hoped that it will also be able to provide Internet connection and electricity to an entire town.

Watly technology harnesses solar energy to purify sewage and seawater, produce electricity and offer an Internet connection. A whole innovation, arising from the work of a group of entrepreneurs spread between Spain and Italy, who plan to start marketing the revolutionary device next year thanks to the funding that the EU has given them through a specific instrument for the most creative SMEs. .

Watly (An autonomous and mobile water treatment plant powered by solar energy) was founded in 2013 using as a starting point a totally innovative approach: combining the possibility of obtaining drinking water, electricity and internet connection in one device. Essential resources today that are not accessible in many areas of the globe. But they are rich, however, in the only source that drives this technology: solar energy.
Led by an international team of entrepreneurs, Watly efficiently desalinates ocean water, removes all pathogens and microorganisms from sewage or contaminated water – from viruses and bacteria to parasites, fungi or cysts -, inorganic compounds and any other poison, according to Watly’s inventors explain on their website. It even purifies radioactive water, all without the need for membranes or filters. Watly produces solar energy, purified water and the internet to supply a small town.

The physical principle on which this innovative system is based is called steam compression distillation. And it is by far “the most effective and powerful method of water purification and desalination available,” they say.

This device is also capable of generating the same amount of energy that it needs to function. Thanks to solar energy, it produces electricity to power its own internal electronic components (computers, screens, 3D printers and different telecommunications devices), and other external devices: laptops, mobile phones, lamps, radios, televisions …

In addition, it is a modular device, so that it can be used independently or chain several of them, in order to turn them into an intelligent distribution network (Energynet, its creators call it), in which water and electricity come together with information technology.
