“They consume thousands of times more storage than our genuine customers.” This is how Dropbox describes in a statement the behavior of a group of users that has led it to end its unlimited plan. It is that the company offered until a few days a business option that provided “as much space as needed.”
What has happened, according to the technology company, is that the Dropbox Advanced plan, which is the one that would offer the aforementioned benefit, began to be used for purposes that were not contemplated in the use policy. And, since it is a growing trend, it has been decided to take the drastic decision to remove it from the current offer.
Cryptocurrency mining, storage reselling and more
Dropbox Advanced was intended to be an attractive option for businesses and organizations. The plan offered not only storage freedom for corporate environments, but also advanced management, auditing, security, and integration capabilities. The truth is that, although many used these characteristics, others went further.
The firm says they discovered that a growing number of customers were using these business subscriptions for purposes beyond running a company. Detected uses included crypto mining and storage resale to third parties. However, this was behavior that, according to Dropbox, could not be sustained.
While the company has abusive behavior guidelines that seek to keep the service running within acceptable conditions, enforcing these rules en masse on the Advanced plan was an ” unsustainable” solution. Therefore, the firm says that it has had no choice but to end this option.
Consequently, all those who join Advanced from now on will receive 15 TB of shared storage per team with their three active licenses. It is enough space, they say, to store 100 million documents, 4 million photos. In addition, each additional license will receive 5 TB of storage.
