Aldi notebook? Many think of inexpensive models for use in the home office. However, the Medion Erazer Beast X20 is aimed at gamers and also cuts a good figure as a power notebook, as our test shows.

Lets discuss about The Medion Beast X20 in details:

Extra power while working

It is clear that when Aldi offers a notebook for 2,000 euros, the equipment is very generous. That starts with the computing power that a Core i7-11800H delivers. This powerful processor from Intel’s current Tiger Lake series (11th generation) with eight computing cores and a clock frequency of up to 4.6 gigahertz ensured an enormous speed in the test. Even with performance-hungry software for photo and video editing, this power plant stayed close to the speed record marks. The processor benefits from a generous amount of memory with 32 gigabytes (GB) of RAM and an SSD with fast NVMe technology and 954 GB of storage space. And if you need more storage, you can retrofit an additional NVMe SSD.

And even more power when gaming

Game enthusiasts can look forward to a powerful graphics chip. The Geforce RTX 3070 is currently one of the fastest models for gaming notebooks. The powerful chip brings games in Full HD (1920×1080 pixels) to the screen with the left, in the test it calculated 115 frames per second (frames per second, FPS for short). And at 4K (3840×2160 pixels), 30 FPS were still possible. The power is easily enough for the display resolution of 2560×1440 pixels – gamers can expect around 60 FPS and a very detailed display.

The screen also accelerates

The built-in monitor is an extra-fast model with short switching times (6.8 milliseconds on average) that works with a refresh rate of up to 165 Hertz . This is irrelevant for work, but a (small) advantage in fast action games, as you can see the opponent a fraction of a second earlier. When working, the display impresses with its particularly even illumination and precise and very natural color reproduction – useful when editing photos or videos.

It only gets loud under full load

It only gets loud under full loadA typical disadvantage of many gaming notebooks is their short battery life. But that only happens with the Erazer when gaming. But the notebook belongs to the power supply anyway in order to be able to use the maximum performance. When working, however, the Erazer lasts almost five hours before it has to be plugged in again.

Plenty of power also ensures plenty of waste heat: the processor already swallows up to 45 watts, the graphics chip can draw even more power. This ensures audible fan noise. When working, it doesn’t bother much with 2.5 sons , but the fans turn to 6.1 sons under full load on. Gamers will hardly be annoyed by this – they usually play with a headset and even get a special double connection (see picture above) with two 3.5-millimeter jack sockets.

Motley

The multi-colored keyboard lighting is typical of a gaming notebook . It looks chic and makes it easier to find your way around when gaming in a dim environment. The built-in touchpad is generously dimensioned – great for working, but users tend to connect a special gaming mouse to play. Speaking of connections: There are two special features here, because the network socket and the connections for an external screen (USB-C with Displayport and HDMI) are on the back (see picture above). This means that the cables do not interfere with the mouse cable.

Test result Medion Erazer Beast X20

The Medion Erazer Beast X20 (test grade 1.8) costs a lot, but also offers a high value: a lot of power for gaming and working, a good screen with high resolution and a generous range of features. Competition for the Aldi notebook is usually a few hundred euros more expensive.
