Android 13 Preview: How to install on your phone

Android 13

We are going to explain how to install the Preview version of Android 13, so that you can start testing the new features of the next version of the operating system. In addition, we will take the opportunity to make it clear to you what exactly this is about the Preview versions of Android 13 and what you can expect from them.

Before we start, I just have to warn you that this version can only be installed on a few selected mobiles, since it is very premature and only certain devices can be installed. Obviously, to be constructive, we will also tell you what exactly are the compatible mobiles.

What is Android 13 Preview

Operating systems, like any other computer program, have several testing phases before releasing each new version with changes. First there are the alpha or Preview phases, which are the first tests before starting to launch the beta versions, which are already the ones that are beginning to reach more users.

The Preview versions of Android are the first to come out of Google’s internal environment, and therefore, they usually have many failures, bugs, and instabilities. They tend to consume more battery power as they are less optimized, and there may be more random crashes.

And hence its importance. Internally, Google has already tested this version of Android and its new features, but with the preview versions they begin to get feedback and opinions from external users who test the mobile on a daily basis. In this way, it is easier to find failures, bugs and errors, and thanks to these tests by users outside of Google, it is possible to speed up the resolution of problems and the optimization of the operating system.

Therefore, one thing that you should keep in mind is that it is not recommended to install the Preview version on a mobile that you are going to use daily or that contains important data, because you may encounter problems or failures. And if you’re going to do it, make sure you have a backup of everything important in case some mistake causes you to have to reinstall Android.

Android 13 Preview Compatible Devices

What Google usually does in preview versions is to launch them only on their own phones, since they are very early versions of Android. Later, when the more stable beta versions start to arrive, then they can start testing on more devices. At the moment, these are the ones compatible with Android 13 Preview:

  • Pixel 6Pro
  • Pixel 6
  • Pixel 5a 5G
  • Pixel 5
  • Pixel 4a (5G)
  • Pixel 4a
  • Pixel 4XL
  • Pixel 4

Within the developer options you also have to activate the OEM Unlock option, which is in the first block of options, and you may see it almost at the top. This is something that the above process may ask you to do.

Now you have to stop and download the ADB plugin on your computer, which will mean that when you connect your mobile to your PC, thanks to the USB debugging mode, you can control it from the computer console. You already have half the way done, the other half you have step by step in our guide to connect the mobile to the PC with ADB.

Once you click on Get Started, a window will appear telling you that you will need the Android USB drivers. If you have followed the steps to install ADB, it is normal that you already have them and you can click on Already installed, but if something fails, here is the link to install them by hand.

Now a pop-up window will open in the browser asking you to access the ADB commands to control the mobile from the web, and proceed to install what you need. Here, it is important that if you still have your system console open after verifying that ADB works, you must type the adb kill-server command to disconnect it from the console, and be able to connect through this web.

This will take you to a screen where you are reminded of the steps you have to follow, such as having the mobile connected to the computer or activating the mobile options that we have told you before. Here, what you have to do is click on the Add new device button that you have at the bottom. This will cause a dialog to appear on your Android mobile that you must accept to establish the connection. A window will open in the browser with the connected mobiles, and you must choose yours.

If you have done this process by entering through the link, after choosing the mobile you should see below the option to install the preview or choose it.

This will take you to a screen where you will be reminded not to touch or disconnect the phone from the PC while the installation is in progress. In it, click on Confirm to confirm and start the installation of Android 13 Preview. During the process you will surely have to do some step on the phone, such as confirming the unlocking of the bootloader, something that you will do when prompted by using the volume buttons to move the menu and accept with the power button.
